"Bears in Air" helps South Bend vets group

A program at the South Bend Airport which provides hundreds of teddy bears to kids recovering in hospitals across our area is helping even more people.

The airport's "Bears in the Air" program generated thousands of dollars, money that will now go to local senior veterans.

The airport Friday presented $6,000 to the Robert L. Miller Senior Veterans Center in South Bend.

Over the past two years, the airport helped raise $11,000 for the center.

The second Bears in the Air collection program began last month.Travelers were asked to donate teddy bears or make a cash donation.

"These particular funds have already been spent for some boxsprings, mattresses, things of that nature, deposits, electrical deposits, to get 'em started as far as that apartment is concerned," said Robert L. Miller Senior Veterans Center Director Kent Laudeman.

A new non-profit organization will be chosen to be the recipient of the donations this year.
