Body found in St. Joseph, Michigan's Morrison Channel

The body was found under this boat in St. Joseph, Mich. (WSBT)

(WSBT) - Emergency crews in St. Joseph, Michigan found the body of a man floating in the Morrison Channel Saturday morning.

A man was pulling out his boat and found the body floating underneath it.

Based on what they saw at the scene, officials say they believe the person drowned.

WSBT 22 spoke with the man who found the body. Brent Campbell, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, says he and his family like to get away to St. Joseph. But on Saturday morning while taking his boat out with his son, they found an unwelcome surprise.

"We were going to get fuel," he said. "As we pulled out, we turned the boat, and as we turned the boat out, the body came out from behind the swim platform."

Campbell says because he backs in his boat, he is used to getting things like logs stuck under his fly bridge - but he was not expecting a body.

He called 911 and dispatchers asked Campbell to follow the body with his boat until first responders arrived. The U.S. Coast Guard then secured and recovered the body.

Police say the subject was found dead and appeared to have been in the water for an extended period of time.

Campbell says the incident doesn't change the way he feels about St. Joseph.

"I think it's just an isolated incident that's got nothing to do with boating or anything, especially on the river. We've been here for two years, and it's a very quiet and nice place," he said.

Police are saying there does not appear to be any sign of foul play.

The name of the deceased has not been released. An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday.

If the autopsy confirms it was a drowning, the Coast Guard in St. Joseph says this will be the first drowning of the season in the area.
