UPDATE: New details released after boy hit by city bus in Dowagiac
A 12-year-old Dowagiac Middle School student is in the hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a bus.
Police say it happened around 2:30 p.m. Friday in the 600 block of Riverside Drive in Dowagiac, less than a half mile from the school.
Police say the 12-year-old was walking home from school with friends when he was struck by the side-view mirror of a city operated bus-- known as the "Dowagiac Dart."
The accident happened outside of the Cedar Sands Apartment Complex.
"The young man was in obvious pain. Screaming, making noise… Not responding verbally,” said Sgt. Daniel Wiggins.
The boy was ultimately airlifted to Bronson hospital in Kalamazoo.
The operations manager for the Dowagiac Dart says the driver of the bus is on leave while the investigation is on-going.
Police say nothing appears suspicious in the case.
