UPDATE: Victim identified in suspicious death in South Bend

One man found dead at Riverside Court// WSBT 22

Metro homicide is investigating a suspicious incident in South Bend.

Police were called to the Metcalfe on W. Riverside Court around 12:30 a.m. Thursday for reports of an assault.

Officers arrived to find 48-year-old Roy Franklin Martinez bleeding.

His condition got worse and police say they tried CPR. But Martinez was pronounced dead at the hospital.

After an investigation, police arrested 32-year-old Kennedy Kafatia on preliminary suspicion of Battery to an Endangered Adult Resulting in Death, a Level 2 Felony.

No formal charges have been filed against Kafatia at this time.

Metcalfe Group Home is owned by Oaklawn. A representative there says it's a transitional residence for mentally ill patients.

Those patients typically come from more intensive treatment facilities.

The rep says at Metcalfe, they have more independence and staff make sure patients get their medications and to appointments on time.

Neighbors say they've never had any problems with the home's residents.

“The most excitement that we have is that there's a gang of feral cats that wanders around and we have deer that eat the vegetables from the garden and that's really all that happens here,” said Colin Pier-Silver.

An autopsy for Martinez was scheduled for the afternoon.
