WSBT 22{ }

Police arrested 26-year-old Bernard Pinkerton Wednesday afternoon after a big police presence in a St. Joseph County neighborhood.

Police are calling Pinkerton a person of interest in a shooting.

The St Joseph County SWAT team found him in a house in Farmington Hills subdivision-- northwest of Auten and Ironwood Roads. They say he does not own the house but may have connections to the people who do live there.

Neighbors were told to stay inside for hours.

Police believed Pinkerton was involved in a shooting in the 900 block of Huey Street last Sunday. They say a person shot into a car with a high powered rifle.

That's why they took extra precaution when looking for him. Some 20 police officers and the SWAT team came to apprehend him.

“We made numerous attempts to contact the person inside the house by phone, by loudspeaker, a number of measures. There was no response. Ultimately, SWAT elements went into the house did very slow clearing search of the residence and ultimately found the suspect hiding in the basement,” said St. Joseph County Assistant Chief Bill Thompson.

WSBT 22 spoke to some of the neighbors. They say they've never seen anything like this.

"This is highly unusual to 14 years, I’ve been here 14 years, and this is the first time we've had the SWAT team here so I couldn't help it come out it's a unique occurrence,” said Rick Ganz.

Police questioned Pinkerton and moved him to the county jail. As of now, there haven't been any criminal charges filed against him.

This case is being investigate by the St. Joseph County Special Victims Unit.
