Candlelight vigil held in protest of ICE Detention Center proposal
ELKHART COUNTY —
Candlelight’s burned in front of the Elkhart County Courthouse Saturday night to show opposition to the ICE Detention Center proposal.
Elkhart County Coalition Co-Coordinator Richard Aguirre, says the event makes the community aware of the importance of welcoming immigrants.
He says it’s important to stop the proposal to build an immigration detention center in Elkhart County. Their main concern is the possibility of private prisons. He says building private prisons is inhumane.
The coalition was created a month ago during a rally last November.
Aguirre says they’ll keep fighting the fight against immigration, racial, and social injustice in the community.
CoreCivic, one of the nation's largest private prison owners hopes to build a facility with up to 1,400 beds near the Elkhart County Jail.
A rezoning application request on the issue goes before the Elkhart County Plan Commission February 8.
