Cold weather delays Elkhart sidewalk project
The cold weather has temporarily stopped a sidewalk project on Elkhart's north side.
The city is building sidewalks on the east side of Cassopolis Street, which is also State Road 19. The project follows several accidents involving pedestrians.
Crews have completed half of the $450,000 project, but the cold weather has prevented them from finishing it.
"Got about half that project complete, near the north end of Cassopolis Street closer to County Road 6. We finished up work on that project for this year, and then waiting for spring and will finish up work on the east side, and then waiting until spring and we finish up that project on the east side all the way down to Bristol Street," Jeff Schaffer, right-of-way engineer.
Work will begin on a $3 million project on the west side of the street in early 2019.
That will build new sidewalks and make signal and crossing improvements.
