A man is recovering Wednesday after crashing his SUV into an apartment building in the 100 block of S. Michigan Street in Elkhart.
There were people in the building at the time, and they are thankful this morning they weren't sitting on their living room couch or this story would be much worse.
The good news: No one inside the apartment was hurt.
They were upstairs sleeping when the SUV crashed into their apartment building just before 3 this morning.
Police say the driver of that SUV most likely had a medical issue when he went through the stop sign on South Michigan and into the apartment building.
His car didn't go through the building -- but it hit with such force there is a gaping hole in the brick wall and everything in that room was thrown several feet. The room is destroyed.
There were four people home at the time -- 2 adults and 2 children. Fire fighters helped them out of the building.
As for the driver of that SUV -- he was outside of the car and unresponsive when crews arrived. He was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police say he will be tested for drugs and alcohol but they don't believe they were factors.
"I heard him come in and back out, come in and back out," said Tereasa Williams. "And that just freaked me out when I could see car lights in my face and somebody back in and out of my house. And it was very, very terrifying."
The people who live in the apartment plan on staying with family for now.
