Elkhart Board of Public Works to acquire land owned by Concord Mall
The Elkhart Board of Public Works agreed Tuesday to acquire land owned by Concord Mall needed to connect businesses on South Main to city utilities.
The board agreed to contract with DLZ Indiana to start the process to get an easement across land owned by Concord Mall Properties.
The city has unsuccessfully tried to contact the mall about the easement for several years.
Board President Michael Machlan says businesses on the west side of South Main between Mishawaka Road and Concord Mall Drive are connected to private water utilities.
Some owners have expressed interest to connect directly to public water and wastewater, but are blocked by the land owned by Concord Mall.
Machlan says the mall being in receivership should not prevent the acquisition of land, but it may slow the process down. He doesn't have a timeline.
