FIRST ALERT WEATHER: Three tornadoes now confirmed in Southwestern Michigan
A round of severe storms late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning caused quite a bit of damage across our area.
Many communities are still cleaning up from the storms.
The National Weather Service has confirmed three tornadoes touched down in Southwestern Michigan.
WSBT 22 has also received reports of uprooted trees, fallen power lines and downed branches.
Niles and Dowagiac in Michigan were hit particularly hard. The Niles fire chief says trees are down and windows shattered all over. On Wednesday morning dispatchers cautioned drivers to be careful as there are still power lines down all over the city.
Niles High School reportedly has damage. It is closed Wednesday due to the power outages.
Power was out mainly on the east side of Niles.
At least 75 calls were make overnight about storm damage in Niles, according to dispatchers.
The Salvation Army in Niles also closed Wednesday after a tree fell onto the building. They say they are not sure when they will be able to open again, due to the amount of damage.
WSBT 22 Meteorologist Ed Russo was in Niles Wednesday morning looking at the damage. He says there is evidence straight-line winds downed trees. It is still unclear whether a tornado touched down. The National Weather Service will be surveying the damage to make that determination.
In Dowagiac at least two trees fell on homes. Police tell us no injuries have been reported.
Trees took down many power lines, so outages are heavy. Even police dispatch was running on backup power Wednesday morning.
Midwest Energy Cooperative said a transmission line serving four substations is down, causing 6,000 outages across Berrien, Cass and St. Joseph counties in Michigan. Niles, Cassopolis, Vandalia and Jones were heavily affected. Crews are working to restore power.
