Ill. man accused of South Bend area crime spree blocks extradition
An Illinois man accused of murder, attempted murder, abduction of a woman and her child and a series of local robberies, is blocking his return to St. Joseph County.
According to court documents, Anthony "Bones" Jefferson, 43, of Carol Stream, Ill. shot and killed 32-year-old Jason Reid and injured Tyreece Walker September 30 in the 600 Blk of N. Brookfield Street in South Bend.
Reid was found dead on the scene from what police say were gunshot wounds, while Walker survived.
Jefferson, three males and one female, are also suspected of going into Images Jewelers in Elkhart with a gun around noon Saturday, September 28. The three suspects got away with an undisclosed amount of jewelry. No one was hurt in the incident.
Then around 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 29, police say Jefferson forced a woman to withdraw money from an ATM on North Main Street in Mishawaka. According to court documents, he kidnapped the woman and her 11-year-old son, forcing them to drive to another location before he let them go.
Around 2:50 a.m. on Monday September 30, Jefferson threw hot coffee in a 7-Eleven convenience store clerk's face before stealing money and cigarettes, investigators said.
Several police agencies, including the U.S. Marshal's Service apprehended Jefferson the night of October 3 after a 4-hour SWAT standoff in Rockford, IL.
Jefferson's next extradition court date in Rockford is set for October 28.
The St. Joseph County prosecutor's office has filed an extradition order to bring Jefferson back here to face criminal charges. Paperwork has been sent to the Indiana attorney general's office.
