Local girl giving back in a big way with cancer care packages
A local girl is giving back in a big way! Janis White from Mishawaka started her own non-profit organization to help those in need.
Recently, she began giving hundreds of cancer care packages at St Joe Regional Medical Center.
"I like to help other people I don't like it when people are sad or down," said Janis.
You won't find Janis White, a 6th grader at Bieger Elementary School in Mishawaka, hanging out like most preteens.
"These are the candles are hope for cancer patients and the other thing that they get are these chemo care bags to make them feel better."
Janis has made it her life mission to help others, spending hours each week packing and passing out care packages to those in need.
At just 6-years-old Janis came up with the idea to help other kids and those who are ill by creating The Janis Care and Share non-profit organization.
"We told her that if anything gets laid on her heart she has the power to help," said Janis' grandmother Marcia Stewart.
Since 2008, Janis has collected and donated over 96,000 items worth more than $500,000.
"I get a lot of it donated," Janis said.
Janis recently began dropping off hundreds of care packages to patients at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, trying to ease the pain one package at time.
"There's something inside of me that just knows that I'm helping other people and it makes my heart feel good," she said.
The Janis Cares Organization is always in need of children's items as well as personal hygiene items.
