Local golf greens opening this weekend for spring-like temps

The temperate weather this year is allowing local golf courses to open up much earlier than usual.

Blackthorn Golf Club in South Bend is open for business today. Juday Creek Golf Course in Granger has been open for business since last Saturday, and the Morris Park Country Club course in South Bend will be open for its members starting tomorrow.

Last year, the first day for golf at Blackthorn was March 20. It was March 7 at Juday Creek and March 8 at Morris Park.

“Being able to open middle of February is definitely something we don’t expect to do, but we’re very excited to do so," says Ben Mesaros, director of golf at Blackthorn Golf Club. "Certainly living in northern Indiana, you don’t plan to budget for green fee, cart fee revenue in the middle of February, so this is just bonus for us that we don’t expect.”

Representatives from all three courses say their course is in good shape for eager golfers right now.

Public courses, like Blackthorn and Juday Creek, see this earlier opening as a way to boost their revenue.

The courses are planning to be open at least through Monday. If mother nature cooperates, they'll stay open even longer.

“If the weather will allow it, we certainly plan to extend it," says Mesaros. "Hopefully we don’t get much more snow any time soon. As long as the weather will allow it, we plan to continue to stay open.”

It is northern Indiana in the middle of February, though. The weather can still change a lot between now and April.

Courses have been preparing for the golf season for a while.

During the snowy months, they sprayed for snow mold to keep the grass healthy. That's important because snow mold can damage or even kill the turf.

Over the past week, courses have been able to dry out, thanks to a little windy weather. Still, the greens are a little too wet to mow.

Crews have also been working hard to clean up tree branches that fell during the winter.

Many golfers have already reserved their tee times, but there are still openings available at all three courses this weekend if you're looking to play a round.
