Man hurt during home invasion west of South Bend


St. Joseph County police Tuesday were called to a home invasion just west of South Bend.

Police say two men broke into a home in the 25300 block of Fillmore Road, adjacent to the intersection with Peppermint Road, west of the U.S. 20/31 Bypass, and robbed a couple at gunpoint.

The 911 call came in around 8:25 p.m.

A 57-year-old man was shot, was taken to the hospital and was in surgery.

According to our partners at the South Bend Tribune, the victim was shot once in the stomach.

Police told the Tribune, the victim told officers two men burst into his home and confronted him in his bedroom.

It appears the victim grabbed his pistol, but the assailants were able to fire a shot, with the bullet hitting him in the stomach.

The extent of the victim's injuries was unknown.

Late Tuesday night, the suspects were still on the loose. Police say they are white men, between 5'6" and 5'8" and were wearing gray hoodies.

There was no word if the victim knew his attackers.
