It was a scary morning for some students after their school bus was involved in a crash on Elkhart's West side.

According to Baugo Community School officials, Bus 5 was carrying 47 intermediate and elementary students.

It happened around 8:43 a.m. in the area of W. Hively Avenue and S. Nappanee Street.

Elkhart Police say traffic came to a stop but the bus was unable to. That's when the bus crashed into a semi-tractor trailer.

School officials were able to confirm police and EMT's were immediately called to the scene. School administration and nurses also responded.

11 students were transported to Elkhart General for minor injuries.

Uninjured students were transported to school by a replacement bus.

When Lisa Dyrhaug got a phone call saying her daughter's school bus had been in a crash she says she was frantic with worry.

"I was in shock, I didn't know what to think. I hung up the phone and at work I was trying to get my stuff, my coworker said no, just go," said Dyrhaug.

She says her daughter and others were thrown from their seats on impact. Dyrhaug's daughter got a minor leg injury.

"I was preparing myself for the worst, but luckily she was not badly injured. It's very scary getting that phone call," said Dyrhaug.

"We want to make sure that we do everything that we possibly can for our students and when something comes into play like this all other things take a back seat," said Jeff Ziegler, director of operations and student services.

Dyrhaug says Baugo's school superintendent and principals handled the situation in a professional manner.

"After I was in with her, the superintendent and the principal from the intermediate came in, and approached each child letting them know they were proud of them and that they were doing very well. That impressed me big time," said Dyrhaug.

Not everyone was happy some people took to social media to voice their frustration with the school district over how news of the crash was communicated to parents.

Police say slippery road conditions may have been a factor in the crash, but they don't know if it was the only one.

The crash is still under investigation.
