LaPorte officer injured in crash after responding to deadly collision

Police say a bicyclist was killed Monday in LaPorte after riding into the path of a semi. An officer leaving the scene later that night then got into a crash of his own when he hit a utility pole.

The crash involving the bike and semi happened just before 7 p.m. at the intersection of J Street and 6th Street. Police say the semi had the green light when it entered the intersection.

The bicyclist, 53-year-old Glen Byrley, disregarded a red light, say police, and was struck by the semi. He later died in the hospital.

Just before 11 p.m. Officer Trent Mamazza was driving away from the scene of the fatal crash when police say he encountered an object in the roadway in the 1100 block of State Road 2 West. He swerved to miss it and hit a utility police.

Mamazza was taken to LaPorte Hospital with a head and arm injury. He is is stable condition, say police.
