Private company submits plan for proposed Elkhart Co. immigration detention facility
ELKHART COUNTY —
New information was released on a proposed $100 million immigration detention facility in Elkhart County.
Our partners at the South Bend Tribune report private prison company CoreCivic submitted a detailed plan Monday to the county planning department.
The minimum-security facility along County Road 7 would be leased to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency.
It would have up to 1,200 beds and house detainees waiting for deportation after a hearing. Construction could start as soon as possible in the spring and open in 2020.
County Commissioners will weigh-in on the issue next month.
