South Bend abortion doctor facing criminal charges

An abortion doctor who runs a clinic in South Bend is facing criminal charges related to an abortion clinic he runs in Lake County. WSBT has confirmed Dr. Ulrich "George" Klopfer has been charged with "failing to timely file a public report," a Class B Misdemeanor.

The Lake County Prosecutor's office filed the charges Jan 8., alleging Klopfer performed an abortion on a 13-year-old girl in September 2012 but did not report it to the Indiana State Health Department until January 2013. State law requires anyone who knows about sexual activity involving children 14 or under to be reported within 10 days of learning about it.

Klopfer's practice in Fort Wayne has been suspended because his state-required back up doctor no longer wants to work with him, but Klopfer is still practicing in South Bend and Gary.

The abortion doctor is also under investigation in St. Joseph County. Prosecutor Mike Dvorak assigned a Special Victims Unit detective to see whether 1,200 complaints filed by the county's Right to Life organization in December rise to the level of criminal charges.

Klopfer is scheduled to appear in front of Indiana's Medical Licensing board Wednesday in Indianapolis. The board wants to ask him questions about comments he made to news media regarding an abortion performed on a 13-year-old girl.
