Emergency responders in South Bend are prepping a new piece of equipment.

A new hazmat vehicle will soon go into service.

This vehicle will replace the two older, smaller vehicles the department currently uses that haul trailers with equipment behind them out to hazmat scenes. Now they can respond with one vehicle.

The new unit represents a $580,000 investment.

It's expected this vehicle will be able to meet the department's needs for up to thirty years.
