South Bend house fire puts two residents in burn ward
Two people were taken to St. Joseph Regional Burn Center in Fort Wayne after a house fire Tuesday in South Bend.
Fire officials say they were called to the 2200 block of W. Smith Street around 7 p.m. They found a man outside who told them his wife was still trapped on the second floor.
Firefighters were able to rescue the wife, who was unconscious. Both she and her husband were taken to Memorial Hospital and then later taken to the burn ward in Fort Wayne, say fire officials.
Firefighters say the fire started on the second floor in the bedroom. The cause is still under investigation.
