As early as today (Wednesday) South Bend police officials are set to begin negotiating a contract for new body and dash cameras.

The Board of Public Works just approved the department's request for new equipment.

Officials estimate the cameras will cost around $1 million.

The department hopes to have 170 new body cameras on the streets by next year.
