South Shore double track funding expected in Indiana budget

South Shore Line// South Bend

The state of Indiana is expected to spend tens of millions-of dollars to help fund a South Shore project.

Plans are in place to double track the South Shore Line between Gary and Michigan City.

According to our reporting partners at the South Bend Tribune, this would speed up travel time from South Bend to Chicago. A typical trip would be about 45-minutes shorter.

Funding for the $290 million project is expected to come from the two-year state budget lawmakers should approve in a few days. Funding will still be needed from the federal government and four counties, including St. Joseph and LaPorte.
