Saint Joseph County Police arrested a man early Monday morning after he reportedly pointed a gun at an officer. The subject, Jason Keltz, 35, of Osceola was also wearing body armor at the time, a county police press release said.

Police said the events started when St. Joseph County Police officer Josh Siekman tried to pull a vehicle over at 12:25 a.m. in the 10000 block of Douglas Road east of Mishawaka. The vehicle did not stop but pulled into the driveway of a residence on that block.

The home was the site of a homicide last year, the press release noted but did not say there was any connection between the incidents.

The driver of the car, later identified as Keltz, got out and ran toward the house, and Siekman gave chase on foot, the release said. As the officer rounded a corner, he saw Keltz pointing a gun at him, and Siekman ducked. The officer slipped in the mud as he sought cover, and the weapon came out of Keltz's hands and did not fire, the release said.

Siekman and another officer took Keltz into custody, and while they were doing so, noticed the man was wearing body armor, police said.

Police booked Keltz into the County Jail on preliminary charges including unlawful possession of a handgun and pointing a firearm. He has not been formally charged.
