Inside a Knights Inn motel room in South Bend, police say 65-year-old Everett Lawrence Harper was shot and killed over an argument.

Court records show police say Harper was shot multiple times at the motel.

Police say this all started as a verbal argument between people who may have been related.

It happened at the Knights Inn in the 3200 block of Lincolnway West on Saturday around 2:36 p.m.

Court records show that investigators found Harper's body and multiple shell casings in a room that police say four other people were in at the time of the gunfire.

Records filed by the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office indicate that 30-year-old Antoine Jefferson is charged with murder.

Adrian Evans, 31, is booked on preliminary suspicion of assisting a criminal, but has not been formally charged.

Witnesses say Jefferson shot at a man identified as "Uncle Harper at least six to nine times," according to the court records.

A man spoke to WSBT 22 about how a girl came running to his room for help.

“She came right here sat in front of the door and then fell down. I asked her what's wrong and she said ‘My dad just got shot!’”

Police say Jefferson got into a verbal argument with Harper and pulled out a handgun.

Jefferson told everyone to not say another word and later told a family member Harper was drunk and wouldn't be quiet.

That's when police say Jefferson fired at Harper multiple times.

One woman in the room told police the man shot was her father.

A relative of Harper tells WSBT 22 that the man arrested is not related to the Harper family and that they don't know either Jefferson or Evans.

Evans told police he drove Jefferson to a friend's house. That friend told police Jefferson confessed to her he "shot someone in a hotel room."

Evans is accused of driving a van to help the alleged gunman escape from the Knights Inn. His case remains under review.

Jefferson, who is accused of murder, is set to appear in court Monday.

Police tell WSBT 22 the Knights Inn is known to them for frequent calls.
