Traffic restricted on the Bypass after semi hits bridge
Traffic is moving on the Bypass once again after an early morning crash involving two large trucks.
Police say a dump truck hit the State Road 23 bridge on the eastbound side, then a semi hit the dump truck.
The following release was issued by St. Joseph County police around 9 a.m.:
INDOT has advised us that we can allow normal traffic on the north/westbound lanes of the bypass. South/eastbound bypass traffic is being shuttled off the bypass at the SR 23 exit ramp across 23 and then back onto the bypass. To manage this route, traffic on SR 23 is being closed at Locust Rd., and at Mayflower Rd. It is likely that closures will affect the regular traffic patterns this area for the remainder of the morning drive period, and possibly longer. Bridge specialists from INDOT are on the way to the scene to assess the damage.
INDOT inspected the bridge and, according to police, allowed traffic to be opened again.
At one point traffic was shutdown both directions during the heart of morning drive.
Both truck drivers were injured but not seriously.
