Saturday events will help local students get ready for the school year
Two programs are underway Saturday in Elkhart to prepare students for this upcoming school year.
The backpack give-a-way program is happening at Agape Missionary Baptist Church.
The backpacks will be filled with school supplies. Last year, they gave away nearly 1,000 of them.
It's at the church from 8 a.m. to noon.
Students will also be able to get a free dental check-up and a haircut.
"So, our goal is to supply for those in need and just, you know, for parents that have so many things, there's school physicals and things that need to be done this time of year. Just one last thing that they need to do. Our mission is to give kids a jumpstart to the year, we have range of groups and programs that will be here,” said Organizer, Anita Morris.
Also happening, the Minority Health Coalition will hold a Health Fair at the Tolson Center. It provides free health screenings and school physicals.
That's from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
South Bend students can get free school supplies at the "Back-to-School" celebration.
Saturday at Washington High School the South Bend Community School Corporation will offer free backpacks and books to students.
There will also be information about mentoring programs, enrichment opportunities and health care services families can take advantage of.
Students must be joined by a parent or guardian. It starts at 9 a.m. and lasts until noon.
