Walkerton teen collects thousands of soda tabs to help kids in need
Next time you're drinking soda and you notice those little tabs on the top of a can, know they can make a big difference.
When you donate tabs to the Ronald McDonald House of Michiana, the funds generated from recycling the aluminum helps offset the charity's expenses.
This inspired one local boy to give back.
Over the past two years, Austin Zellers has collected 50,000 pop tabs!
It all started when the John Glenn High School student’s friend was diagnosed with bone cancer.
Austin wanted to take action and help a charity that would aid his friend's battle.
His initial goal was 20,000 soda can tabs, but when he started to exceed that he decided to keep going.
Austin has dealt with medical issues of his own, with internal seizures and severe asthma -- leaving him hospitalized. So the Ronald McDonald House mission is close to his heart.
"I haven't been in those shoes completely, but I know how it feels," he said.
