A South Bend Police officer is credited with pulling a woman from a burning home Wednesday.

Officer Shawn Fredenburg arrived in the 1000 block of E. Chippewa Avenue in South Bend around 6 a.m.

A fire had broken out in the kitchen. Investigators say the fire was caused by unattended cooking.

Officials say Officer Fredenburg pulled the woman from the home after arriving and kicking down her door. He pulled her to the curb as paramedics were arriving.

Investigators say the woman was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters say a dog was also in the home but ran off before crews arrived.
