Lions devour suspected poacher, leaving only his head and some body parts
(KUTV) - A suspected big cat poacher is no longer in business after being devoured by the prey he was hunting.
BBC News reported police investigating the alleged poacher's death said the African lions near the Kruger National Park in South Africa ate the man, leaving only his head and a few body parts.
"It seems the victim was poaching in the game park when he was attacked and killed by lions," Limpopo police spokesman Moatshe Ngoepe told AFP and was quoted in the BBC report.
The victim's identity is still being investigated with help from the Home Affairs Department, but the man's loaded hunting rifle and ammunition were found next to his body parts, South African website Eyewitness News reports.
Authorities initially believed the remains found belonged to a tractor driver who had disappeared, but he was found alive thus turning the attention of their investigation toward a poaching suspect.
According to published accounts, lion poaching has increased in recent years in the Limpopo province. Three male lions were found poisoned in Limpopo with their paws and heads cut off in January 2017, the BCC reported.
Sometimes the lion's body parts are used in traditional medicine, and their bones and other body parts are sometimes used in place of highly sought after tiger bones, the BBC reported.
