Brandon Wimbush's foot injury status is improving, as Notre Dame gets closer to it's game this weekend at North Carolina.

Brian Kelly said Thursday after practice that he will make a game-time decision whether to start Wimbush.

But even if he opts for sophomore Ian Book instead, Wimbush will still be available to play as the back-up.

Kelly says Wimbush has made steady progress throughout the week. He went from just some light throwing & stretching on Tuesday, t running on Wednesday, and finally taking reps with the offense Thursday afternoon.

Kelly said, "He practiced today and did some good things. I think we will still go day to day, and make the decision on game day. If he doesn't start, he's going to be able to do something, absolutely. He's in a good place. We've got two more days, and he'll get some more rehab but he's where we hoped he would be. And we expect more progress to be made over the next couple of days."

So, if Notre Dame wants to use him on Saturday, he is available.

Kelly also said tonight - that should they need a 3rd quarterback, they would go with senior Montgomery VanGorder, preserving freshman Avery Davis' red-shirt.

The Irish & Tar Heels play at 3:30pm Saturday afternoon.
