Burger King Outstanding Student Athlete: Marian's Jessica Nowicki
Mishawaka Marian senior Jessica Nowicki has all the tools of a leadoff hitter.
“She is a very good base runner, she’s learned how to both slap hit as well as stand in and hit which creates an issue for defenses.” Said Marian head coach Geoge Grenert, “She definitely brings speed, but one fo the things I like about Jessica is her attitude. It’s better than her speed.”
Which is saying something, considering Nowicki has stolen 64 bases on 71 attempts in her first three years at Marian. That attitude has put Jessica in the perfect spot to be a leader in her senior year.
“I definitely think my personality is contagious, I’m very upbeat.” said Nowicki, “I like to bring my personality on the field to push myself to be better but also push the other girls as well.”
That up beat approach seems to be working for the senior centerfielder. Nowicki holds a career .495 batting average with 97 hits, but its her ability to carve up the base paths that helps her stand out. Nowicki has tallied 64 stolen bases over her first three seasons on 71 attempts.
“Base running is my favorite thing to do. It’s so rewarding to use my speed, I like stealing bases and I like being able to take as many opportunities as I can and run with it.” said Nowicki
One opportunity she’s run away with is the chance to continue playing at the division I collegiate level. Nowicki’s ability to lead and leadoff afforded her a scholarship to Fort Wayne but before she changes the color of her jersey, Nowicki wants her team to improve enough to defeat Marian’s biggest rival.
“Beating St. Joe in the Holy War, you know that is always a number one priority around here and it would be really awesome to be able to do that my senior year.”
Nowicki and the Knights will get their chance on May 1 as they host the Tribe at D’Arcy Field.
