UPDATE: Team captains named for 2018-2019 football season
NOTRE DAME —
Notre Dame football will hit the practice field for the first time this Spring on Tuesday. When they do there will surely be plenty of optimism.
The Fighting Irish are coming off of a 10-3 season in which they won the Citrus Bowl over LSU 21-17. While the Irish have 10 returning starters on defense, they'll have to replace at least five guys on offense who will be playing in the NFL this fall.
Which means Irish head coach wants to create an environment of competition this Spring, including at the quarterback spot.
Last season Brandon Wimbush spent a majority of the season in the starting position. In his 12 starts, Wimbush completed 126 passes for 1,870 yards and 16 touchdowns, however, sophomore Ian Book came in during the Citrus Bowl and played well, completing 14 passes for 164 yards and a pair of scores.
"You've got to put somebody out there first. And by virtue of a lot of the really good things that Brandon did last year, he'll go out with the first group. But we all know Ian was integral in our last win against LSU, and he deserves an opportunity to compete as well," said Kelly. "I think what we'll do is we'll foster an environment where our players truly know they have an opportunity to compete for starting positions. So I wouldn't use words like he's the presumptive starter. But yet he's going to be going out with the first group. But Brandon knows that he's got to work on his skill set as well."
Kelly named Center Sam Mustipher, Linebacker Drue Tranquill and Punter Tyler Newsome as team captains for the 2018-2019 season.
