New and old part of Notre Dame Stadium field turf
We're learning that the new field turf being installed inside Notre Dame Stadium will feature a combination of new and old designs for Notre Dame football's playing surface.
There will be a large, blue interlocking ND at the 50-yard line similar to the one recently installed behind home plate in the baseball stadium.
Notre Dame also revealed that shamrocks will be placed on the 35-yard line where the kickoffs will take place, but the new surface will also contain some of the nostalgic feel for which Notre Dame Stadium is known.
The end zones will remain simple, each with nine diagonal lines running towards the Golden Dome and the basilica.
"The interlocking ND is the most recognized symbol of our University and its athletics programs, and we wanted to communicate that to our fans and all those viewing our home games," said Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick in a written statement. "The integration of the shamrocks allows us to achieve consistency across all of our new or recently renovated facilities where both the interlocking ND and a shamrock have a presence on the playing surface."
The new turf will be delivered next week.
Installation will begin immediately and be done in time for the season opener on August 30.
