New Prairie seniors ready to take next step
New Carlisle, IN —
Last year came as a surprise to some outside of the program at New Prairie High School.
And even some within it.
The Cougars seemed to be in the midst of a rebuilding year in 2016, with a large group of juniors playing the bulk of the snaps, but they were able to put together a 9-3 season, reaching the sectional championship game eventually falling 35-14 to Hobart.
That group of juniors swallowed the tough loss and got to work vowing to make the next step in their final season.
"We just know what we have to do to get it done." said New Prairie senior quarterback Nick Wilson, "Our losses really fueled us this off-season to work hard and get better and win this year."
For head coach Russ Radtke, who enters his sixth season at New Prairie and 41st overall, its going to require this group of seniors meshing with the underclassmen early in the year.
"They know what its going to take at the end of the year, but its about how good we can be at the beginning of the year to get us going." said Radtke, "I think bringing the underclassmen to their level is a hard thing for them to accomplish right now. I feel like the technique is there its just whether we can get the whole thing gelling as a team."
The Cougars will see if they can gel together as they face an early test. New Prairie opens the season on August 18 when they take on rival LaPorte on the road.
