Artificial turf brings new look to historic School Field
South Bend —
The upgrades to historic School Field took a very noticeable next step on Tuesday. Crews began installing the artificial field turf at the downtown landmark and soon there will be no confusion as to which high school teams call the site home.
The end zones will have a blue base layer with bold green letters bordered in white which represents South Bend Adams and South Bend Washington, and soon there will be a large "SB" emblazoned at the 50 yard line.
The $1.2 million project includes new lights and is slated to be completed by August 1st.
"I just can't believe how beautiful it is out here." said South Bend Community School Corporation Director of Athletics Seabe Gavin who turned up on Tuesday to check in on the progress, "I honestly cannot wait for the first game."
Washington will be the first to play on the new surface as they open the regular season on August 17 against Hammond.
