A new scam text message involving local fire departments is going around the Michiana area.

Dowagiac Fire is warning residents of a fake text pretending to be from the department.

The text offers a limited-edition t-shirt and provides a link to buy the shirt.

Hartford, Pokagon, and Dowagiac are just a few of the departments that scammers have tried to pose as.

Report it and make sure the fire department in question is notified, just to make sure they are notified so they can report it. And if they choose to report it to the authorities, you know make sure they do that,” said Deputy Chief Anthony Stewart, Dowagiac Fire Department.

Deputy Chief Stewart says that it is important to not engage with the message or click on the link.

Officials say Fire Departments will never ask for your personal information over text or social media.
