Huge project could be in the works for Goshen residents

It's one of the biggest projects to come to Goshen in a long time.

A developer wants to build an upscale apartment project and add some condominiums. It will also include a new park and new parking downtown.

The biggest portion of the overall project will go on a property along South Third Street.

It's an upscale apartment complex that will be called River Art with around 46 units.

Insite Development will invest $11 million to build it.

Developer Scott Sivan was attracted to the location because it's near the Mill Race Canal and it's a lively community with an artistic background.

"When I first went to Goshen I was impressed by the level of animation in the downtown area. There seemed to be kind of an artistic quality to the place,” said Sivan.

"He was interested in the way this project could become part of what is already a growing art scene,” said Mark Brinson with the Community Development Department.

Sivan recently completed work on the River Rock Complex in Mishawaka.

“It is a higher quality project, but really the quality is in the design and in a way of the attitude of the project,” said Sivan.

Sivan will also renovate the north end of the hawks building and put in around 20 condo units at a cost of $3.5 million.

The city has high hopes for the project and what it could mean to adding more housing in the Maple City. There are still a number of details that need to be worked out, but they would like to see it become a reality.

"We've been meeting with Scott Sivan for several months now, discussing what he would like to do. We are now going public with that, so that we can get the public's input and find, you know, do they like what he is talking about. But Scott Sivan does a great job with design,” said Goshen Mayor, Jeremy Stutsman.

Work could begin on the apartments and condos in the Spring. It should be completed by early 2019.
