Cold Case Files: Local murder to be aired on ID channel

Investigators had suspected for years that Phillip Geans was responsible for the murder of Theresa Burns.

But it wasn't until 26 years after the Mishawaka teen was murdered in her home that police were able to arrest him.

The big break in the case, came from old evidence.

Craig Whitfield, the original lead investigator spoke with WSBT 22 about the case.

Theresa was murdered in her home on January 11, 1988 after she had gone home mid-morning around 10:30 a.m. to change clothes. Her body was discovered at approximately 5:15 pm by her older brother, Steve Burns.

Over the course of the investigation a suspected murder weapon was recovered.

Tonight, 'On the Case with Paula Zahn' an Investigation Discovery Channel show will feature this case.

It airs at 10 p.m.
