Moms First: South Bend 'Santas' hope to spread cheer through handcrafted toys
21 days till Christmas and the countdown is on to find the perfect gifts for your loved ones this season.
A local wood shop is working overtime to hand make thousands of toys for kids across the country.
South Bend Wood Works makes beautiful handcrafted toys, but the owner says even more beautiful is he is providing jobs right here in the USA.
Santa's workshop has left the North Pole and made its way here to South Bend.
"These are happy products. There’s a lot of grumpiness in the world right, but in these situations these are generally things that bring happiness,” said Mike Lindburg.
Lindburg started South Bend Wood Works a few years ago with an idea to make beautiful, handcrafted custom toys.
"Our biggest seller is a custom name puzzle that we make on demand on order for children,” said Lindburg.
After many requests, now the toy business has expanded into a customized collegiate collection as well.
"Our cutting boards, our wall hangings, our Christmas ornaments and no one says, ‘Boy I've had a bad day.’ They say, ‘That's cute.’ That’s the nice thing about this business that evokes a positive response,” said Lindburg.
Lindburg says what he's most proud of his toys are made here locally not overseas.
"When you hire someone, it’s never just one person you affect,” said Lindburg. “It’s a husband, a wife, it’s children, it’s parents in general. They buy things so the multiplier of that one job is fabulous."
South Bend Wood Works says they love bringing joy to children and families this holiday season with their handmade toys and items that will be enjoyed for years to come.
"If you buy one of ours, I know that you children and grandchildren and maybe even your great grandchildren will be able to use it,” said Lindburg. “It’s that well-made."
