South Bend neighborhood shocked after deadly shooting
One person has died following a shooting in South Bend's northwest side early this morning.
The deceased is Michael Willie Briggs, 24, of South Bend, according to a press release from St. Joseph County Metro Homicide.
Three other people were shot but survived.
Two 24-year-old male victims are in stable condition now after initially being brought to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. A 34-year-old female victim was treated at a hospital and released.
The shooting happened just before 2 a.m. on Yukon Street, just south of Angela Boulevard and Portage.
Neighbors say it's surprising for this close-knit neighborhood.
"All my neighbors are friendly," says Kenny Haithcox. "We keep in contact with each other. We walk our dogs daily you know. This is really out of the norm."
However, they know not all parts of this area are as friendly.
"There's rougher parts in neighborhoods everywhere, but the dropout is say a block and it turns to a different setting I guess," says Haithcox
Dispatch says they received a Shot Spotter notification and several 911 calls.
Neighbors who WSBT spoke with say it sounded like fireworks were going off.
"It sounded like firecrackers," says Gary Crawford. "There was such a barrage of rounds that went off all at one time. I thought well it sounds like gunfire, but the way it went off it must have been fireworks. It wasn't."
Bullets, clothes, and other evidence littered the street from Portage to Riverside.
Metro Homicide is investigating this shooting.
An autopsy is for the man who died is scheduled for Monday.
