A crash between an SUV and South Bend police car Friday killed a young mother and injured an officer.

Police say 22-year-old Erica Flores died.

Patrolman Justin Gorny is expected to be OK.

This happened at the intersection of Western and Kaley. We still don't know what led up to this crash.

The FACT team was out all Friday morning gathering information trying to figure out how this deadly collision happened.

What's normally a quiet time of the morning was chaotic near the intersection of Kaley and Western in South Bend.

A collision between Gorny's car and a white jeep left the officer injured and Flores, the driver of the jeep, dead.

We're told the officer was driving east on Western with his lights and siren activated.

The woman was going north on Kaley.

FACT examined the crash scene for nearly eight hours. But we still haven't pieced together exactly why this collision happened.

Gorny was treated from the hospital for injuries to his face and back.

WSBT 22 did speak to Flores' family.

They tell us she was driving home from work.

She was a single mother with two little girls. They say she dedicated her life to caring for her daughters.

It was clear they're devastated by the news of her loss.

There are still many questions surrounding this crash.

We're hoping to get some of those answers in the coming days.
