Local bicycle riders now have a new option: Boland Trail is on South Bend's northwest side.
It's two-thirds of a mile long and connects the Riverwalk Trail, as well as bike lanes on Portage Avenue.
City leaders hope trails like this will make South Bend more attractive to people who might move here.
To sweeten the deal, the parks department will keep those trails plowed in the winter.
" I think for those of us who bundle up and run in the winter time or people who rely on biking, not just recreationally, but often to get to work, that’s really a responsibility,” said Mayor Pete Buttigieg. “In the same way that we make sure that the streets are clear, we need to begin working to make sure that the trails are clear too."
The trail project cost $1.3 million. Federal funds covered 80 percent of that.
