SOUTH BEND — Crews battled a fire at Paul’s Auto Yard Friday morning, according to dispatch.
That's on the 3300 block of Main Street in South Bend.
Thick black smoke could be seen from miles away.
A firefighter had spotted the smoke and crews were already on their way before they were dispatched. When crews arrived, they found a building with old cars engulfed in flames.
"There were some automobiles in there, gasoline, some oil that was burning off. The companies got in, they made a pretty aggressive attack on it. We maintained a defensive strategy and we were able to knock it down and bring it under control within probably 20 minutes,” said Battalion Chief Chris Baker, South Bend Fire Department.
Investigators don't yet know how the fire started.
No one was injured.
