NILES TOWNSHIP — Berrien County police say they are investigating what they call a "suspicious event" -- a man who apparently caught on fire and had to be rushed to the hospital.
The following release was issued Wednesday by the Berrien County Sheriff's Department:
On November 22, 2016 at approximately 2019hrs. the Berrien County Sheriff Department responded to Birchcrest Estates located at 2330 E. Main St. in the township of Niles, for the report of a man on fire. Deputies arrived and found a male subject covered in smoke and lying on the ground. The subject was immediately taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, IN. by SMCAS Ambulance who also responded to the scene. At this time, no other information is available as this case remains under investigation.

The victim in this incident is a 49-year old-male resident of Niles, MI.
The victim was flown to Cook County Hospital from Memorial Hospital of South Bend due to the extent of injury.
The victim was pronounced deceased Wednesday morning. This case remains under investigation
