Elkhart is suggesting new improvements to the Civic Plaza and Central Park area.

It's an area of downtown Elkhart that's been getting more and more use. The site where the Civic Plaza and Central Park sit side-by-side.

“In about the last three years, the downtown area has went from five events, to 53, to 66," said Mayor Tim Neese, Elkhart. "That's a phenomenal increase."

This past August, the city kicked off an initiative to revitalize both areas and put in more amenities to create an improved gathering place.

It hired a design team to come up with those changes. The team held two public meetings to get input on that.

"Some of the areas that we heard were perhaps public bathrooms, additional lighting, a permanent stage as well as permanent bleachers," said Neese. "People like the green space that the park provides."

With that input, the design team came up with three design concepts for a revitalization project, and each is slightly different.

For those who couldn't attend the earlier two meetings, they can go online to make their ideas known on a survey.

What will happen with this final online survey is that you will not be asked to pick which of the three concepts you like, but rather what you would vote on and prefer out of each of those that would go into final design itself.

“Another feature that I want to add is a water park,” said Neese.

The $1.5 million project will be funded by the redevelopment commission using TIF revenue.

You have until November 28 to make your choices known online. To take the survey, click here.
