There was a large police presence on the northwest side of South Bend after a shooting and crash on Portage near the Lathrop roundabout.

The altercation just after 9 Saturday morning led to one person left dead in the road.

The crash happened between two cemeteries -- Highland and Riverview. Portage Road between the Lathrop and Boland roundabouts were closed for the investigation.

Police tell us an extensive search using a K9 led to a suspect being detained in the 2100 block of Beverly.

We are told a loaded weapon was recovered at the scene.

South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski tweeted the following in response to the incident:

Bare minimum: at least 2 families and a community affected by another senseless shooting.

WHEN will it be enough?!!

Families/friends-it’s past time for you to step in!!! #ENOUGH

I’m confident at least one other person knew this was likely going to happen as in 99% of other incidents...yet let it happen!! #stopit

South Bend police say Metro Homicide is taking over the investigation.
