The Michigan City Park District is now looking to build a permanent barrier along its lighthouse pier.
This comes after a video of two young children on the pier with waves crashing around them was shared online.
The children struggle to hang on as they walk along the pier.
They eventually made it safely back to shore.
The park district is asking the Army Corps of Engineers, which owns the pier, for permission to build a barrier to keep people from making such a walk when the waves are dangerous.
The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project says towns up and down the lakefront should consider something similar.
Officials say when conditions are bad like they were in the video, stay out of the water and off the pier.
