Mother and son are safe thanks to smoke alarm after South Bend house fire

SOUTH BEND — A mother and her infant son are safe after escaping a house fire in South Bend.

It happened just after 8 a.m. Tuesday at a home on North Cushing Street.

Investigators say the family got out thanks to a smoke alarm.

Officials believe the fire started in the kitchen.
