Parents could face charges after children left in car with exhaust leak
ST. JOSEPH COUNTY (Mi.) —
Two children were transported to the hospital Sunday morning after being left in a car with an exhaust leak.
It happened around 11:50 a.m. at the Sweet Lake Trailer Park off U.S. 12.
Deputies with the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department responded after a call that two children had stopped breathing.
According to reports, the parents had driven from Coldwater to look at a trailer. Both children were left in the running car while the parents spoke to the park manager.
Investigators say the car had an exhaust leak that lead exhaust from the engine to enter inside where the children were sitting.
As the leak continued the children were overcome with fumes. That's when people began performing CPR, police say.
Medics arrived on scene soon after and began treating the children before transporting them to a hospital in Kalamazoo. Their condition is unknown.
The prosecutor's office say the parents could face criminal charges.
