Metro Homicide identifies South Bend man who died after he was shot in front of his kids
A man is dead after police say he was shot in front of his kids on the South Bend's south side.
This happened around 8 p.m. Tuesday near Milton and St. Joseph streets.
The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit has identified the man killed as 33-year-old Antoine Coleman of South Bend, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office.
Police say Coleman was in a vehicle with his young children when he was shot. The children were not hurt.
Police say the kids will go with their mom.
"God had to be in that car redirecting those bullets because by all practical purposes, both those kids should've been dead," said Metro Homicide commander Tim Corbett.
Investigators say they have interviewed several witnesses but no arrests have been made. Investigators say Coleman was not the victim of a random crime. Detectives believe a dispute may have led to the shooting.
"This is a case where the community finally has to get mad. Really mad. Stop protesting. Stop marching and finally get involved. Make people accountable. Have people come forward and tell exactly what happened," said Corbett.
The commander of Metro Homcide has this message for the shooter:
"You're a coward. You almost killed two little kids. Be man enough to come turn yourself in and tell the story. I doubt that will be the case because cowards don't do that," said Corbett.
Metro Homicide suggests this shooting may have been gang-related. Although they say this shooting likely is not related to the other shooting in South Bend earlier in the day.
